I recently had the privilege of photographing a Zhuazhou celebration — a traditional Taiwanese(and Chinese) first birthday ritual that’s rich with meaning and joy. In this beautiful ceremony, the baby is presented with several items, each symbolizing different future paths — wealth, wisdom, and longevity.

The baby gets to choose from these items, and their selection is believed to offer insight into their future!

For this special celebration, the little one picked a stethoscope, symbolizing a future in medicine or healing, a book, representing wisdom and knowledge, and a musical instrument (flute), pointing to a potential love for music or the arts.
